Frequently asked questions about Copilot
If you just want to try AI chat, Copilot Chat is free and good enough. If you want AI that knows your company data and can work directly in Word, Excel and Outlook, you need Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30/user/mo.
No. Copilot Chat only has access to web data and public information. For Copilot to access your SharePoint files, emails and Teams data, Microsoft 365 Copilot with tenant grounding via Microsoft Graph is required.
Microsoft 365 Copilot is integrated directly into Office apps and has access to your M365 data. ChatGPT Enterprise is a standalone AI platform from OpenAI. Copilot uses OpenAI's models but adds Microsoft Graph integration, compliance and data security within your tenant.
Yes. Microsoft 365 Copilot requires a base license such as Business Basic, Standard, Premium, E3 or E5. F1, F3 and Office 365 E1/E3/E5 also qualify. It cannot be purchased standalone. In E7 it's included at no extra cost.
Microsoft 365 Copilot costs $30/user/mo. For 50 employees: $1,500/mo or $18,000/year. With E7 ($99/user/mo), Copilot is included along with E5, Agent 365 and Entra Suite, total $4,950/mo for 50 users.
Copilot Cowork is an agentic automation layer inside Microsoft 365 Copilot. You describe a task in natural language, and Cowork breaks it into steps and executes across M365: writing emails in Outlook, creating Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, scheduling meetings and doing research. Cowork requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license as a prerequisite and is billed on a usage basis via Copilot Credits on top of the license ($0.01 per credit on PayGo).
No. Work IQ is the intelligence and context layer that powers Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents. It runs "under the hood" and comes with your M365 Copilot license. It is not a separate purchase. Work IQ is the reason Copilot and Cowork understand your data. There are also Work IQ APIs, but those are for developers and IT building custom agents.
Partly. Copilot Chat comes with most Microsoft 365 licenses at no extra cost and can be used for general tasks with commercial data protection. What it cannot do is work on your own files, mail and meetings. For that you need Microsoft 365 Copilot at $30/user/month, or Copilot Business at $21/user/month for organizations up to 300 users. Both are add-ons that require a qualifying baseline license.
Copilot Pro no longer exists. It was an individual consumer license at $20/month that Microsoft retired on 6 October 2025 and replaced with Microsoft 365 Premium. For organizations the relevant products are Copilot Business ($21/user/month, up to 300 users) or Microsoft 365 Copilot ($30/user/month). If you are searching for "Copilot Pro" or "Copilot Premium" for a business, one of those two is most likely what you need.
